1917 Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarter (MS-65FH)

This 1917 Philadelphia struck Standing Liberty Quarter contains the original design Hermon A. MacNeil created in 1916. Additionally, this 1917-P Type 1 possesses fully struck devices earning it the “Full Head” designation. Out of all 8,740,000 Standing Liberty Quarters struck in Philadelphia during 1917, only .02% are graded MS65 with a Full Head designation!

Designed by Hermon A. MacNeil the Standing Liberty is known as one of the most stunning designs in American coinage. MacNeil`s design features Liberty standing in between a wall with 13 stars and holding a shield and olive branch. The Type 1 design features Lady Liberty wearing an artistically draped gown that exposes her right breast. Due to controversy, this was soon changed to Liberty wearing a suit of chain mail in the Type 2. On the reverse of this Type 1 is a naturalistic depiction of an eagle in flight with 13 stars surrounding it. In the Type 2, 3 stars were moved below the eagle.
